Apple wants Siri to stop waiting for the next command
Apple's answer to ChatGPT's Dots is apparently "next year, maybe". Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported on Sunday that CEO John Ternus is pressing Craig Federighi to speed up the Siri roadmap and ship an agent that can compete with OpenAI's Dots and Meta's Muse.
The near-term steps, per Gurman as summarized by The Verge: fine-grained control of Apple's own apps (crop and rotate in Photos, organize Safari tabs) with iOS 27.3, then third-party app actions in the spring, so Siri could place a Grubhub order or book through OpenTable. The newsletter also mentions a change to how Apple develops iOS 28.
The real shift is the line Gurman quotes about rivals: Dots, Muse and Grok "can keep track of goals, determine what needs to happen next and continue pursuing objectives without the user initiating every individual step". Apple wants to go there, and Gurman thinks it could happen as early as next year, "not that it has much of a choice".
For developers, this connects straight to the Siri AI Developer Preview from last week, where App Intents became the way an app exposes actions. If Siri moves from one-shot commands to goals that run on their own, those intents stop being shortcuts and become the tool list for the biggest consumer agent runtime there is. Every app with a checkout button should be thinking about what it lets an agent do without asking.
One caveat: this is a single-source report from a paywalled newsletter, not an Apple announcement. The direction is believable. The dates are Gurman's.
