Anthropic's Office skills just went Apache 2.0, and every other harness can take them

The four skills people copy most, docx, pdf, pptx and xlsx, are now open source. A commit to anthropics/skills on Nov 6 at 22:32 UTC (PR #2146) replaced each of their LICENSE.txt files with the full Apache 2.0 text. The commit message is one line: they "now use the same Apache 2.0 license as most other skills here". No blog post, no announcement. The repo picked up 793 stars on GitHub Trending on Sunday as people noticed.

What changed is bigger than the diff looks. The old license opened with "All rights reserved" and said use was governed by your agreement with Anthropic. In practice that meant the best-known document skills were source-available but legally tied to Claude. Codex, Pi, OpenCode or an in-house agent could read them but not ship them.

Now they can fork, vendor and redistribute them, with attribution. These are not toy examples either. The Office skills carry the hard-won details of dealing with real document formats: tracked changes in Word, formulas in Excel, layouts in PowerPoint, form filling in PDFs. That is exactly the kind of tacit knowledge that took Anthropic months of user bug reports to build.

Why give it away? Skills are becoming a cross-vendor format, with the Agent Skills spec now under the Agentic AI Foundation. If the skill format wins, the best reference library being open makes Claude's format the default everyone builds against. Giving away the content to own the standard is an old move, and a good one.

One precise note: the commit says "most other skills", not all. Check the LICENSE in any skill folder before you vendor it.
