Karpathy Walks Into Anthropic
Andrej Karpathy tweeted "I've joined Anthropic." 1030 upvotes on HN front page, top story of the day. One of OpenAI's eleven co-founders, former head of Tesla AI, the most influential individual brand in AI education β now on Anthropic's pre-training team under Nick Joseph.
Not policy, not product, not education. He's going back to the hardest core: pre-training. His own words: "the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative." He's building a team that uses Claude to accelerate pre-training research itself.
A year ago he left OpenAI to start Eureka Labs and the consensus was that he was done with frontier model work, that he was an educator now. One year later he picked Anthropic over OpenAI, xAI, Meta, SSI. For the first time the pre-training talent gravity has a clear non-OpenAI pole.
Two weeks ago Anthropic bought Stainless. Last week they expanded the PwC deal and plugged SandboxAQ into Claude. Today they get Karpathy. Dario's "models commoditize, connective tissue moats" stops sounding like a slogan.
