ExpressVPN Launches First VPN MCP Server for AI Agents
ExpressVPN has launched the industry's first VPN MCP (Model Context Protocol) server in beta, enabling AI tools like Claude Code and OpenAI Codex to control VPN connections through natural language.
The MCP server creates a strictly local bridge between AI tools and ExpressVPN's desktop apps, allowing developers to verify VPN connection status, switch server locations, check security settings, and troubleshoot connectivity issues — all without leaving their workflow. It uses a fixed command allowlist and operates under ExpressVPN's no-logs policy.
Available to subscribers on Basic, Advanced, or Pro plans and ExpressVPN for Teams customers, the beta launched March 5, 2026 and supports macOS, Windows, and Linux. The server is compatible with any MCP-compatible AI tool.
This marks the first time a VPN provider has embraced MCP, signaling a shift in how privacy tools are designed: not just for humans clicking buttons, but for AI agents operating autonomously on behalf of developers.
