Mistral Vibe: One Agent for Coding and Real Work
Mistral launched Vibe today on Product Hunt, a single agent that does two things most labs deliberately keep separate: long-running coding work and the email/calendar/spreadsheet stuff that takes up the rest of your week. Work Mode runs multi-step tasks across connectors, scheduled workflows, and documents. Code Mode lives in the web app, VS Code, the CLI, and remote sandbox sessions wired up to GitHub.
The thesis is the unification itself. Cursor, Codex, Claude Code own coding. ChatGPT Agent, Gemini Spark, Manus own productivity. Mistral is betting the next round goes to whoever stitches them together so the same agent that ships your PR can also schedule the demo, draft the changelog email, and update the spreadsheet your VP wants. New VS Code extension launches alongside.
For a European lab that's been losing model-quality battles to the US frontier, this is a smart positioning shift. Don't try to win on raw IQ. Win on what a knowledge worker's day actually looks like, where coding is 30% of the work and 'agent that also sends the email' is the missing piece.
The risk is the same as every unified agent before it: doing two things half-well usually loses to doing one thing all the way. Mistral has to prove Vibe doesn't ship a B-grade Claude Code stapled to a B-grade Manus.
