Claude for Word: Anthropic Quietly Invaded Microsoft's Kingdom

Anthropic just put Claude inside Microsoft Word. Not as an external chatbot you copy-paste from — as a native sidebar that reads your document, edits with tracked changes, and stays in a persistent conversation.

This is a bigger deal than it looks. Claude for Word doesn't just suggest text. It shows edits as tracked changes, the same revision workflow lawyers and editors have used for decades. You see exactly what Claude changed, accept or reject each edit, keep full version history. No more "let me paste this AI output and hope the formatting doesn't break."

But the real kicker is cross-app awareness. Claude for Word connects to Claude for Excel and Claude for PowerPoint — one conversation thread spanning all three open documents. Ask it to check if the revenue numbers in your Word report match the Excel model. Ask it to align slide language with the narrative in your document. One AI brain across the entire Microsoft 365 stack.

It's currently in public beta for Team and Enterprise plans. The timing is deliberate — Copilot has been Microsoft's answer to the AI productivity question, and now Anthropic is saying: we can do this too, inside your tools, with our model. The tracked changes integration alone tells you Anthropic is thinking about how knowledge workers actually work, not just how to generate text.
