Meta buys Conductor, OpenAI buys Pierre: the neutral layer of coding agents is getting absorbed

Wednesday was a strange day to be a coding-agent tools startup. Conductor announced it is joining Meta. OpenAI announced it will acquire Pierre. And Business Insider reported that Cat Wu, who led product for Claude Code, is going to OpenAI to lead product management for its core products team. OpenAI confirmed the hire, Anthropic declined to comment.

If you use Conductor, here's your calendar. New sign-ups stopped Nov 4. Conductor Cloud goes read-only Nov 13, and data deletion begins Nov 20, so export before then. Subscribers get refunds and pro users keep pro features for free in the meantime. The local app keeps getting new models and critical fixes until early 2027. Conductor promises "something new" early next year. Sixteen months from launch in July 2025 to two weeks' notice on the cloud product. No price disclosed, and this comes from Conductor's own announcement.

Why that matters beyond its users: Conductor's whole pitch was running a team of other people's agents side by side, Anthropic's and OpenAI's included. A multi-vendor control room now lives inside a lab that sells its own models. Hold that thought next time you build on a neutral layer.

OpenAI's deal is more structural, and it isn't closed yet, pending regulatory approval. Pierre makes Code Storage, plus the Trees and Diffs libraries already inside the Codex app. Earlier this week OpenAI published Pando, its in-house source control backend for engineers and agents, because Codex was breaking Git at its scale. Put them together and the plan is explicit: OpenAI wants Codex to run from "the first branch an agent creates" through deployment. Open-source projects stay open and Code Storage customers can continue, it says, while the features move into Codex. Watch what happens to the second half of that sentence.

Add Brockman telling a WSJ conference that OpenAI "wasn't even in the conversation" on agentic coding in the first half of the year, and the Wu hire reads as a catch-up campaign with a checkbook. My bet: within a year, every major lab owns its own source control, review surface and agent workspace, and "works with every model" becomes a much rarer promise. If you're choosing tools today, ask one question: what's my export path on the day this gets bought?
