Gemini Notebooks Lands for Free Users, NotebookLM Quietly Comes Along

Google rolled out Notebooks in the Gemini app to free users on April 17. Up until now this was an Ultra/Pro/Plus only feature. Free tier gets 50 sources per notebook, Plus gets 100, Pro 300, Ultra 600.

The actual move is the NotebookLM sync. Every notebook you make in Gemini shows up in NotebookLM and vice versa. Custom instructions, file uploads, past chats β€” all moved into a project workspace and shared between the two apps. NotebookLM was already the best research tool Google has ever shipped. Now it's stitched into the everyday chat surface.

This is Google reorganizing Gemini around projects instead of conversations. Same direction OpenAI took with ChatGPT Projects, same direction Claude took with Projects then Cowork. The chat-as-stream model is dying because nobody wants to copy paste files into a fresh tab every Monday morning. Long lived workspaces with persistent context win.

The free tier rollout is the move that matters. Once a billion people have a place to dump their PDFs and chats and have an AI reason across them, the bar for "I need a separate research tool" goes way up. NotebookLM was Google's secret weapon. Putting it in everyone's pocket via Gemini is how it stops being a secret.
