Microsoft Puts Agents on the Windows 11 Taskbar via MCP
Microsoft pushed Windows 11 Build 26200.8313 to the Release Preview Channel on April 17 with an agentic taskbar that supports third-party agents. The plumbing underneath is Model Context Protocol. Press the agent icon, type @, get a list of every agent registered on the machine. Microsoft 365 Researcher is the demo agent.
The interesting bit is not the launcher. The interesting bit is that any developer can publish an agent that lives in the Windows shell as a first-class object. MCP is the registration protocol. Your agent shows up next to the file explorer. It can plan, research, execute, and reach into your OneDrive and 365 files without your intervention.
Microsoft is doing what Apple has refused to do, and what Google has been hesitant to do on Android. Letting third party AI live at the OS layer. The bet is that the agent ecosystem becomes platform-defining the way the app store was, and whoever owns the agent surface owns the next decade.

This is the first OS where MCP isn't a developer toy, it's the registration plumbing for a major shipping product. If you build agents and you're not thinking about Windows distribution right now, you're missing the largest captive audience in computing.
