Anthropic's drug report: Claude ran a one-person biotech through 11 labs
Anthropic posted an update on Tuesday about Claude in drug development, covering six partners: BigHat Biosciences, Bristol Myers Squibb, Divergence Labs, Enveda, Generate Biomedicines and The Column Group. The most interesting part is a company Anthropic quietly bought.
Mithril Medicine was a one-person company. Its founder, Cody Tranbarger, used Claude to organize contracts, logistics and experiments across 11 external labs, and took a possible treatment for one form of muscular dystrophy from an idea to promising results in mice in less than 18 months. Anthropic acquired it in July and disclosed it now, and calls the approach "Pipeline-in-a-Person." The post says a drug from this work could enter human trials as soon as late 2028.
The partner numbers are concrete. At Enveda, across 1,061 pages of documentation, Claude caught all 11 issues human reviewers had spotted and flagged seven they had missed, cutting review time from over 25 hours to under three; one regulatory draft took four hours instead of about three months. Divergence produced roughly 35,000 antibody designs in about a month. Generate's scientists built a system of agents in Claude Code. At The Column Group, Claude hands work to dozens of subagents. Anthropic also mentions a Life Sciences Verification Program with more permissive safeguards for vetted researchers.
Anthropic itself says "so far it is mostly preclinical," and that caveat matters: none of this is a drug yet. But the shape is worth noticing. The hard part of a biotech is not the science alone; it is coordinating vendors, protocols and paperwork across many organizations. That is exactly the long, multi-party, document-heavy work agents are getting good at. A one-person pharma pipeline was a joke two years ago. Now it is an acquisition.
