Blacksmith Raises $66M Series C and Greptile Raises $50M Series B: investors are now paying for the part after the agent writes the code

Two rounds in 48 hours, same thesis. Blacksmith announced a $66 million Series C on October 21, led by Sequoia, at a $1 billion valuation. Greptile announced a $50 million Series B dated October 19, led by Menlo Ventures with Jump Trading, Wing, Operator Collective, Benchmark, YC, Browder Capital and Initialized, at a $750 million valuation, with Deedy Das joining the board.

Blacksmith runs continuous integration, the build, test and validate step every code change goes through. CEO Aditya Jayaprakash wrote that most companies are struggling to keep up with the volume of CI they need to run, especially now that so much code is written by AI. The growth numbers back it up: annual recurring revenue up 17x, more than 90 million CI jobs run, customers including Mercury and Granola. The pace is the story. The Series B was two months ago at $550 million, the Series A a year ago at $60 million. Link: https://www.blacksmith.sh/blog/series-c

Greptile does AI code review, and claims it reviews and tests more than 1% of all pull requests opened on GitHub every day, for teams including Nvidia, Coinbase, Decagon and Vanta. Its positioning is the sharpest line in either announcement: the best companies use multiple coding agents and run all their changes through Greptile as a single, independent validation layer. It also admits the uncomfortable part, that coding got orders of magnitude faster while the impact on a team's ability to ship has been modest. Link: https://www.greptile.com/blog/series-b

Put together, these rounds say where the bottleneck moved. Writing code is cheap and getting cheaper. Knowing whether it works, running the tests and reading the diff, is now the scarce step, and it is getting priced like infrastructure. Independent is the key word in Greptile's pitch: if you run three different coding agents, you do not want any of them grading its own homework.
