Replit's $100M switch shows what the coding price war is really about

Last week Replit made OpenAI the default model for Replit Agent. On Saturday The Information reported why, and the answer is price.

According to the report, Replit moved most of its AI spend from Anthropic to OpenAI after OpenAI offered more than 30 percent off in a deal worth over $100 million a year, and after Anthropic declined to extend the discount Replit had been getting. The headline says it all: "Anthropic's Margin is OpenAI's Opportunity." https://www.theinformation.com/articles/anthropics-margin-openais-opportunity (paywalled)

Read it from both sides. Anthropic is heading toward an IPO and is protecting margin on the product where it has the strongest brand, coding. OpenAI is buying share with discounts on the customers that matter most for showing developer momentum. Neither move is surprising. What's surprising is how cheap the switch was for the customer.

That is the real lesson for anyone building agents. For an agent product with a decent harness, the model has become a swappable line item. If a customer spending more than $100 million a year will move over a 30 percent price gap, then a discount only buys share until the next model release or the next price cut. The lock-in labs hoped coding agents would create is showing up in the harness and the workflow, not in the model.

It also explains why products like Cindy and HumanLayer, which treat Claude Code and Codex as interchangeable backends, are trending the same weekend. When the buyer can switch on price alone, the layer that makes switching easy is worth more than any single model behind it.
