Kimi and Codex both reset quotas this weekend, and Kimi is trimming subagent calls
Two coding-agent vendors handed out usage resets on the same weekend, and one of them said why the quota was burning. On Sunday Moonshot posted: "We're sorry for the rate limits and unnecessary quota consumption on the K3.1 Pro subscription plan. These were our issues, and we should have fixed them sooner." Every subscriber on every plan gets a one-time reset restoring 25% of their monthly quota, about a week of usage, and Moonshot says it is "reducing unnecessary subagent calls and output length, so your quota goes further."
That last clause is the interesting part. The fix for quota burn is not a price change, it is a harness change: fewer subagents spawned and shorter outputs. It matches what the cost numbers already showed. Artificial Analysis puts Kimi at $1.98 per Intelligence Index task, about the same as K3, because average output grew from roughly 48,000 to 55,000 tokens and ate the per-token discount. A subscription plan is really a bet on how many tokens the orchestration layer will spend for you, and Moonshot just admitted its own agent loop was spending too many.
OpenAI did the same thing on the Codex side. Tibo, who leads Codex, posted "Day 20/ Rest and reset" late Saturday and pushed another usage reset, followed by "Enjoy some mad codexing tomorrow." Resets are turning into a routine retention tool for agent subscriptions. If you build on top of one of these plans, assume limits will keep moving and log your own token use per task.
The apology also left something out. Kimi K3.1 Pro's launch week came with an allegation, covered by VentureBeat on Sunday, that a promotion brief told creators "Please DO NOT put on the paid partnership label." VentureBeat notes the document "has not been independently authenticated" and that it is unclear whether it came from Moonshot or an outside agency. Moonshot's post addressed rate limits and said nothing about the brief. Until it does, treat launch-week X buzz for any model as advertising, and wait for independent evals and the November 4 weights.
