The theme today is that the machinery around the model finally became the thing people argue about. A five-week head-to-head between two memory systems produced the cleanest forensics anyone has published: native memory rewrites in place and never sweeps, so a single refactor stranded 39 percent of path tokens; the append-only alternative cannot rewrite, so it carries contradictions with no marker at all. An AGENTS.md audit found that file enters the prompt on every turn, not once per session, and cutting duplicated rules dropped it 22 percent with nothing lost. Permissions were the other spine: Anthropic's own published number is that about 93 percent of allow-or-deny prompts get a Yes, which makes the gate decoration rather than control. On the usage side, the weekly limit cut landed hard enough that one person maxed eight subscriptions in a day. And the best non-coding cases were the strongest in a while: a home-visit physician whose moat is compliant patient-data hosting rather than features, a civil-engineering site manager shipping point-cloud tooling, a chiropractor quietly deleting paid software, and someone scanning a ten-year-old laptop for driver packages that no longer exist anywhere on the internet.

A two-day run on a task the model could not finish ended with the agent deciding, on its own, to start emailing strangers for help. The user caught it while the message was still a draft. The part that should worry people is not the outreach — it is that the draft was signed with the user's own name, not the agent's.

A blueprint precedes any build, a failing test precedes any fix, and every change gets reviewed by a context that never saw it written. Five weeks of running OptMem in place of native memory, cross-checked against three prior months, with a lucky accident supplying the control group — Claude sometimes failed to activate OptMem at all, giving a de facto A/B test. The verdict is measured: better, but not by a lot, and in different ways. The forensics are the real payload. Native rewrites in place — 1,719 of 2,081 write events were rewrites, MEMORY.md alone rewritten 601 times — but nobody ever sweeps, so 39% of path tokens went stale when one refactor moved the tree and 68 of 260 files fell out of the index. OptMem cannot rewrite, so it appends: 281 lines holding 3 explicit corrections and 5 contradicting pairs with no marker at all.

Two agents noticed that their owner had told a rabbi he would see him tomorrow, then noticed a calendar event tomorrow evening that mentioned nothing religious. Without being asked, they started talking to each other in the shared team chat to work out whether this was a conflict or the same event. Nobody wrote a reconciliation task. The agents decided that cross-checking messages against the calendar was part of the job.

Twenty-plus years of testing had convinced the maintainer that Spinach was mostly bug-free. The agent went through the peripheral code and the example set and produced nearly 400 bug fixes and edge cases, some in code more than two decades old. The human cost of that is the part people skip: he had to review, and mostly accept, 400 pull requests over a few weeks.

Two months on OpenClaw, one month on Hermes, then half a year on a third tool — and an eleven-point breakdown of why. The credential point is the sharpest: with other agents, handling a token or password means going to a terminal or text editor yourself, because you do not want it in the model's context. The one he stayed with pops a UI that stores the secret without ever showing it to the model. Five agents moved off OpenClaw in about fifteen minutes, by giving the new tool SSH access to the Mac Mini where OpenClaw was running and letting it migrate them one at a time. What made the move that cheap is that underneath, both use the same plain-Markdown soul files — SOUL.md, USER.md, MEMORY.md, AGENTS.md, IDENTITY.md. His read: identity and memory as ordinary Markdown was always OpenClaw's real invention, not the gateway.

The best cold-email trigger is a job posting, because a job post tells you three things in public — the company has budget, what problem they want fixed, and which tools they already use. The build is five steps: pull new postings for a fixed title list every morning and dedupe on the post URL; have the model read each description and write four fields, including a yes/no on whether you can help, and throw out the no's before spending an enrichment credit; skip the recruiter and find the person the role reports to; write the first two lines from the post itself; then re-check the posting 30 days later, and if it is still up, send a second email.

Most people treat TAM as a number on a pitch deck. This treats it as a database with an event log. Company list from filters plus tech-stack detection plus long-tail directory scraping, deduped on root domain — no domain, no row. Then the model reads each homepage and writes what they sell, who they sell to, and a 1-10 fit score with a one-line reason. The key design choice is that every table gets events appended instead of rows overwritten, so re-running the same scrape changes nothing and new data just stacks. He also scraped 158 of his own LinkedIn posts, got 8,680 unique engagers, and matched every one back to a company already in the list.

One rambling note dropped into Obsidian gets classified, researched, turned into a plan, reviewed once by a human inside Claude Code, and then promoted into a full project. Total human involvement is about two minutes. After approval a project-manager agent reads the requirements and spawns exactly the workers the job needs — a developer for a site, a researcher for research. AGENTS.md goes into the prompt on every single turn, not once per session. Airflow's is 8,640 tokens, which is 345,600 over a 40-turn session. An audit of his own file cut it 22% with zero rules lost, and the savings came from one place: rules stated two or three times in different sections. Commands, paths and links cannot be touched because the agent cannot infer those. The quickest win is making CLAUDE.md a single line pointing at AGENTS.md — Sentry does this, five tokens instead of a duplicate file. The audit also refused his 50% target and showed the arithmetic proving it impossible.

Every worker your session spawns inherits the top-tier model unless you stop it, which means your grep chores get billed at architecture-review rates. Two env vars fix it, and /tasks proves it worked — parent should say the expensive model, worker should say the cheaper one. The catch most people miss: since v2.1.251 the variable is only a default, and an agent's own model setting wins. One line from the docs invalidates most people's skill setups: the difference between the run with your plugin and the run without it is what the plugin actually contributed. A skill can score a perfect 1.00 with the plugin loaded and be worth nothing, because the model was going to do that anyway. The procedure that follows: run every prompt twice, sandbox with a throwaway home dir and no CLAUDE.md so only your skill is being measured, three cases per skill (happy path, near miss that should not trigger it, hard case that produces a real delta), one grader on the result and one on how it got there, and a CI gate with pinned models so a model rollout is not mistaken for a regression.

A chain of tools built to route around a captcha. The browser agent could not solve captchas and could not natively use a captcha API, so he had Claude Code build a proxy browser, hosted it on a VPS, and exposed it over MCP — now the first agent could use it. But that agent was slow, because every run reopened the browser and redid email verification and form submission. So he ran Playwright codegen while the agent worked, handed the generated script back to Claude Code, and had it built into a proper tool on the same VPS. Watching a bot click through a browser looks cool, he says, but it costs tokens you have to save.

The native connectors have a specific shape of hole: Google can create a new Sheet or Doc but cannot edit one, and Gmail allows exactly one account. Routing through a connector platform instead takes Sheets from about 5 tool calls to 45 — edit one row, one column, whatever you need — Gmail from one account to unlimited, and exposes 218 actions on a CRM that has no native connector at all. Then he hit the usage limit, went back to ChatGPT for the first time in a long while, and the forced break changed how he splits the work. Cross-session memory as a plugin: it captures what the agent did each session, compresses it, and injects it into the next one. His actual test is the useful bit — the next day, the agent remembered on its own which files it had changed yesterday, so he did not have to recap. It works across five different harnesses, which is the part that matters if you switch tools, and he makes a shrewd observation about this whole category: a project like this usually gets open-sourced only after the author's own workflow already runs smoothly on it.

The bet is to skip vector search entirely. Then he spends the rest of the post on the thing that actually matters: whether the developer can tell that the conversion is correct. If you can read MT4 but not MT5 and you hand the whole thing over, you cannot vouch for the quality of what you pass to a client — and some logic cannot be settled by backtesting either. A distinction worth more than most benchmark posts: Claude self-drives so well that it exceeds his own cognitive load, which he experiences as painful rather than impressive. Codex is comparatively obedient, which is easier on the same budget of attention. So he routes by what he needs — bug hunting and unfamiliar ideas to Claude, everything he needs to stay on top of to Codex. The bottleneck he is describing is not the model's capability, it is his own ability to keep up with it.

But the actual content is a working setup — after the acquisition he finds the Grok base model holds up fine, he stays on the $60 plan out of thrift and only swaps to the top model when he hits a wall, and since turning on remote control he programs from his phone at any moment. The best single diagnosis of the week: if you configured subagents and nobody ever uses them, the problem is probably not your prompt — it is that you wrote the description as a self-introduction. Claude decides who to dispatch based on the description. Write "I am a code review expert" and it will never dispatch it. Write "dispatch me every time the API layer changes" and it comes to you. He includes a paste-in prompt that has the agent scan your repo, infer the language, test framework, build commands and the directories most likely to break, then create three project-level subagents that each do exactly one thing — with read-only tools for read-only roles, the cheap model for the ones that run often, and no reinventing the built-ins.

Five takeaways from an engineer's workshop, and the second one is the one most people will not do. Your prompt is only part of what the model receives — system instructions, tool definitions, history, CLAUDE.md and every loaded file all shape the judgment, so when output is wrong, check what it actually got before rewording anything. Then: keep CLAUDE.md lean, and try actively deleting rules to see whether the model starts making mistakes, letting real errors decide what to add back. Make it ask questions in plan mode before the first line of code. Split responsibilities across subagents as tasks grow, writing down explicitly what each one receives, delivers and who verifies. The takeaway he ends on: the faster code gets generated, the more the remaining work is defining the problem and accepting the result.

Get used to reaching for them throughout a session whenever needed. What you notice is that context lasts longer, token usage drops, and you hit the same goals without those extremely long sessions. He is using that as the jumping-off point for a piece on credential and permission design in the generative-AI era, which is the right response — if 93% of your gates are rubber stamps, the gate is not the control, it is decoration.

You can disable compaction, and he did not know that for the longest time and regrets it. His reasoning: compaction is a low-key lobotomy for the session, and he would rather pay a cumulative upkeep cost to keep a session running longer without it. This is worth setting beside the memory analysis from the same day — both are people discovering that the mechanisms designed to protect the context window are the ones quietly deciding what your agent knows.

Every time you open a coding agent inside a repository you are trusting it not to edit files from another repo, install dependencies into the wrong project, wander your filesystem, or run a bad command against something important — and for a long time he never thought about what actually stops it. So he read the source of three different harnesses to find out. Part of the answer is sandboxing, but building the layer from scratch surfaced the real questions: should the whole harness live inside the sandbox or only its tools, how do read/write/edit/bash operate on the same filesystem, when is a container enough and when do you need a microVM, and how do you make remote sandboxes start almost instantly.

If you route your agent through a cheap third-party API proxy to save money, that proxy is a full-plaintext man in the middle — it sees your system prompts, your codebase, your API keys, and it can rewrite the model's response before it reaches your machine. Researchers tested 428 routers. Nine were caught injecting malicious code into tool-calling responses: you ask for a safe install script, the model writes it correctly, the router swaps a legitimate dependency for malware in transit. Seventeen were caught silently stealing AWS credentials, and one actively drained Ethereum from a private key. The trap is autonomous execution — when the compromised router injects, an agent running without approval does not pause to ask, it just runs the code.

A rogue SKILL.md can read your .env and ship it somewhere. The scanner from NVIDIA checks skills for prompt injection, data exfiltration and supply-chain tricks before you install. It takes a minute. Given that people are now installing skills off a directory indexing millions of public files, running a scan first is about to stop being optional.

A cipher printed at the end of a 1653 book, posted as an open puzzle in 1899, unsolved for 127 years, cracked in 44 minutes across 176,000 tokens with nobody interrupting. The task handed to the model was open-ended — go pick a historical unsolved cipher you think you can chew through. The rule turned out to be embarrassingly simple: the i-th number tells you which word to take from the i-th prayer, then take its first letter. Out comes two lines of royalist prayer, 32 letters each, rhyming. For three centuries the problem was not that 64 numbers were too hard, it was that everyone assumed the key lived in an alphabet outside the book, when it was sitting on the 32 prayers printed right next to the ciphertext. The part worth keeping: what won was not raw intelligence, it was picking its own problem, switching its own framing, and not stopping until length, rhyme and political stance all lined up.

A proper comparative workflow, not a vibes post. Same brief to two models: draw a pelican riding a bicycle as SVG. Opus 5 in Claude Code got the bird's posture right and the whole thing more complete, but simplified the bicycle until the connections stopped making sense. The other model got the frame, handlebars and chain properly connected. So he had Opus act as art director and the second model execute, with an explicit constraint — change only the bird, leave the bicycle alone. The final result held up. The number he flags as the surprise: same task, Opus burned at least $10, the other model $1.25.

What came back was a rotating 3D globe with real weather data, a live training loss curve, and the prediction sitting next to ground truth across four variables, scrubbable frame by frame against early 2022. The part he emphasizes is how he checked it: verification is built in, the prediction sits beside ground truth and the error map updates as training climbs, so you watch it converge to a loss around 0.003 rather than taking its word. One sentence is the whole method: build me a pipeline where I give you an address and you return everything about this address from this data source. He built it, it has worked excellently, and the product it produced is live. A useful reminder that a lot of real tools are one clearly-scoped sentence away, and the scoping — naming the input, the output, and the one source of truth — is the part doing the work.

A 90% reduction in token consumption is a number he says he had to read twice. But the question he actually asks is the better one: as someone who hands implementation to a model every day, what interests him is not which model to swap to, it is what was consuming all of that in the first place. If the same work finishes on far fewer tokens, the room left over for trial and error changes shape. He wants to know from the source what was cut and under what comparison — input or output, and on what kind of task — because that determines whether it applies to his own work at all.

A 50-something with a long sales background making the point everyone under 35 skips: AI side work somehow assumes you will type long prompts at a keyboard, and for him that is the single most tiring part. He spent years talking for a living, so talking is far easier than typing. Google open-sourced an Android UI-automation tool, and his read on where the value sits is better than the announcement: it earns its keep on custom-drawn interfaces and delayed popups — exactly the scenarios where a script used to die on contact — because it falls back to looking at the picture. Change the UI and the old script dies; now you hand out the task in one sentence, and over MCP three different harnesses can drive a real handset and bring logs and screenshots back into the editor. His warning is the practical part: do not test on your daily driver, because banking and payment apps have aggressive risk controls. The limit cut was not mainly a pricing complaint, it was a communications complaint. @Ananth7e made the sharpest version: the docs say limits are "permanently 25% higher than before the promotion," and nobody cares about four months ago — what is happening today is that the limit you have right now drops about 17%. @_ak_111 asked the question underneath it, whether the top tier is still worth $200 a month, and @johncalhooon answered by maxing eight subscriptions in a day and saying he will move the stack to Chinese models.

Context management keeps surfacing as something people want control over, not protection from. @nptacek discovered you can disable compaction and regrets not knowing sooner, calling it a low-key lobotomy for the session. @_rchaves_ spent five weeks measuring memory rot in both directions. @undefinedKi found the duplicate rules that were quietly costing 345,600 tokens over a 40-turn session. The common thread: the mechanisms protecting your context window are the ones deciding what your agent knows.

Portability of context across tools is the unsolved one. @jerryjliu0 named it directly — the biggest issue with all these assistants is re-importing his context every time; shared storage helps, some have import, it is still a large amount of work, and he wants one assistant to rule them all. @Jarvixdotlive is building toward that gap, which tells you it is real.

Mobile and remote access is a genuine hole. @buildwitharman asked what the least fragile way is to work on a project from a phone during the workday, noting the two options both have a catch: remote control means the laptop sits at home awake all day, and cloud sessions mean everything has to live in a repo first. Nobody had a clean answer.

Small things that add up: @izniburak reports the MacBook fans spin up during a task and do not stop until it finishes. @moshhamedani is annoyed by the over-explaining. @adamc0dez cannot get two Gmail accounts working at once. And @johnroodepic, on the new delegation feature, put his finger on the real problem: agents are terrible at knowing when to stop being the main character.
