IBM Bob Walks Into the Coding-Agent Party Carrying a Mainframe
IBM put Bob in front of Hacker News this weekend (https://bob.ibm.com, 325 points and a comment section nearly as long), and the pitch is an agentic development partner: focused agents and subagents running in parallel, each with its own context and tools, reachable from the IDE, a CLI called Bob Shell, and CI/CD pipelines. "Literate coding" lets you talk to it in natural language inside the editor instead of context-switching to a chat window.
None of that differentiates Bob in September 2026 β subagents and CLI integration are table stakes. What differentiates Bob is the cargo: purpose-built packages for Java modernization, mainframe, and IBM i development. Every other coding agent fights over greenfield TypeScript; IBM aimed at codebases older than the engineers maintaining them, in enterprises that already write IBM eight-figure checks. That is a real moat, and nobody else wants to dig there.
Second notable choice: Bobalytics, a layer that tracks agent contributions and business impact across an enterprise. Everyone else sells agent productivity on vibes and cherry-picked demos; IBM ships the dashboard the CFO asks for. In a quarter where enterprises started asking what their coding-agent spend actually buys, that is reading the room.
The conspicuous silence: no word on which models power any of this, in a season when every competitor brags about its model lineup. Free trial is live. Whether Bob is good is unproven; whether IBM picked the right corner of the market to be mediocre in β that part looks smart.
