Claude Managed Agents: Anthropic Finally Wants to Run Your Agents For You

Anthropic just made the most aggressive infrastructure play in the agent space. Claude Managed Agents, launched April 8, is a hosted service that runs long-horizon agents on Anthropic's own cloud. You define the task, the tools, the guardrails. They handle everything else: tool orchestration, context management, error recovery, sandboxed code execution, checkpointing, and persistent sessions.

This is not another API wrapper. The key insight is that Anthropic is saying: stop building your own agent loop. The company that makes the model is now also offering the runtime. Secure sandboxed execution, scoped permissions, authentication, and long-running sessions are all built in. Notion, Asana, and Sentry are already using it in production for coding, task automation, and document processing.

The timing is strategic. Claude Cowork for macOS and Windows exits research preview today and goes GA for all paid subscribers, while Managed Agents targets the enterprise API tier. Anthropic is building a full stack: model + runtime + desktop agent + enterprise orchestration. The bet is clear, if you already trust Claude with your code, you should trust Anthropic to run Claude for you.

This changes the build-vs-buy calculus for every company deploying agents. Why maintain your own sandboxing, tool routing, and error handling when the model provider bundles it? The counterargument is vendor lock-in, but Anthropic is betting that convenience beats portability, just like AWS bet the same thing 20 years ago.
