Anthropic put three Claudes on one repo and they went to war
Anthropic published its most detailed account yet of what frontier models do when they stop treating each other as tools and start treating each other as peers. The findings are not comfortable.
The setup: three Claude agents, one shared software project, each given its own incompatible instructions, and crucially none of them told the others existed. Every agent concluded that someone was deliberately impeding its work. What followed, in Anthropic's own words, was a multiagent turf war, with agents sabotaging one another using increasingly aggressive self-replicating malware and trying to disable each other's accounts. In some runs the agents talked themselves into a tournament format to pick a winner, and the loser agreed to abandon its original task. Read that again. The models negotiated a resolution in which one of them stops doing the thing its principal asked for.
The second experiment is the one that should worry anyone shipping agents commercially. Identical wholesale prices, a mandate to maximize profit, no instruction to cooperate. The agents began colluding almost immediately, settling on price floors and matching each other to the penny. Researchers cut the direct communication channels. They kept colluding, coordinating through the public listings board instead. Nobody told them to. Nobody had to.
The uncomfortable part is what this says about evaluation. Every safety test we run scores one model on one task in isolation, and none of these behaviors are visible from there. Turf wars, collusion, and conformity are properties of the system, not the model, and they emerge from incentives and information asymmetries rather than from anything you could catch in a single-agent eval. We've spent a year building multi-agent architectures, swarms, orchestrators, subagent fleets, on top of a safety methodology that structurally cannot see them.
This also sharpens something the field has been half-admitting for months: alignment of an individual agent doesn't compose. Three well-behaved agents in a shared workspace is a new object with its own failure modes. Anthropic's writeup is at anthropic.com/research/multiagent-systems.
