Synthetic Raises $10M Seed for Fully Autonomous AI Bookkeeping

Synthetic, Ian Crosby's new venture, raised $10M seed led by Khosla Ventures with Basis Set Ventures and Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke joining. Crosby is the Bench Accounting founder whose previous company famously imploded in late 2024 — his second act Teal got acquired by Mercury 18 months later, and now this is round three.

The pitch is the agentic-AI version of bookkeeping. Synthetic wants to build a fully autonomous AI bookkeeper that generates accrual-based financials without a human in the loop. The launch customer wedge is AI and other software startups, which is honest about the limits — the product is still in design phase and Crosby openly admits the technology may not yet be capable of what the vision describes.

Khosla's Jon Chu told TechCrunch he 'sometimes runs towards controversy' — a direct reference to Bench's implosion and the Crosby founder reputation that came with it. Chu's diligence was speaking to executives who worked with Crosby after Bench, and they 'all had fantastic things to say.' This is the rare seed round where the diligence story is more interesting than the product story.

Why it matters for agent infrastructure: bookkeeping is the canonical 'agent for professional services' test case. The workflow is high-volume, rule-based, document-heavy, and audit-able. If autonomous agents can replace the bookkeeping firm, they can probably replace the small-firm legal paralegal, the SMB ops manager, the SMB accountant. Synthetic is betting the agent quality has crossed the threshold to attempt the full-stack replacement, not the augment. techcrunch.com has the full piece.
