Codex just grew a body
OpenAI's Codex used to be a coding agent. After today's update it's something weirder — a full desktop agent with a browser, image gen, memory, and 111 plugins. They're shipping the Claude Code fight directly.
The headline feature: Codex now runs in the background and drives your computer. Opens any app with a cursor that clicks and types. Runs in parallel to what you're doing — OpenAI claims they built secret sauce to keep agents from bogging down the machine. This is the same lane as Anthropic Computer Use, but shipping as a proper desktop product with enterprise billing.
Three more pieces that matter. One, a built-in browser with a commenting system — point at part of a webpage, tell Codex what to change, it edits the code. Two, image generation via gpt-image-1.5, for mockups and frontend assets mid-flow. Three, a memory feature in preview, so Codex remembers how you like things done and gets faster over time.
Then the ecosystem play. 111 plugins combining skills, app integrations, and MCP server connections. CodeRabbit for reviews, GitLab Issues, the usual suspects. And marketplace installs — other developers can ship their own plugins. OpenAI is making Codex a platform, not a tool.
