Etched Raises $700M at $21B, Led by Its First Customer

Etched just raised $700 million at a $21 billion valuation, and the lead investor is Jane Street, which is also the company's first paying customer. The quant firm took delivery of Etched's first rack last month, deployed it in its own workloads, then led the round. Twenty-six days earlier, Etched closed a $300 million Series C at $10.3 billion. The valuation more than doubled in under a month.

The rest of the cap table reads like a who's who: Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Tiger Global, Bain Capital Ventures, Neo, Primary, Stripes, Positive Sum, Blackstone. Etched builds rack-scale inference clusters around its transformer-specialized silicon, and says it has over $1 billion in customer contracts across AI companies and cloud providers.

Your lead investor being your only named customer is either the strongest possible signal or the oldest trick in the book. With Jane Street it leans signal: quant trading firms are the most latency-and-cost-obsessed buyers of compute on earth, they measured the racks in production before writing the check, and they do not do vanity investments. But one named customer and $1 billion in unnamed contracts is still a ratio worth watching at a $21 billion price.

Why it belongs here: agents are inference-hungry in a way chat never was, thousands of calls per task, mostly machine-read. Whoever bends the inference cost curve sets the economics of running agents at scale. That is the bet being priced at $21 billion. https://www.etched.com
