Anthropic Inks $1.8B Akamai Compute Deal

Anthropic just signed a seven-year, $1.8 billion compute contract with Akamai. Bloomberg broke it on May 8. Akamai stock jumped 27% on the news, the largest single-day move in the company's history.

Akamai initially announced the deal on Thursday with a "leading frontier model provider" without naming the customer. Bloomberg sourced the identity. The contract is the biggest deal Akamai has ever booked and represents the CDN giant's pivot into the cloud compute business it has been building over the past three years.

This is the sixth major compute deal Anthropic has stitched together in the last 60 days. Add it to the list: Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Fluidstack, SpaceX (announced last week), now Akamai. Dario Amodei said Anthropic is "working as quickly as possible" to secure compute after seeing 80x growth in annualized revenue and usage in Q1.

The Akamai pick reads less like a compute decision and more like an edge decision. Akamai has 365,000 servers in 4,200 locations across 130 countries. If Anthropic is planning to push Claude inference closer to enterprise customers (latency-sensitive agent workloads, regulated regions, sovereign hosting), Akamai's edge footprint is what they get that AWS/GCP/Azure can't match cleanly.

The structural read: every model lab in 2026 needs at least four compute counterparties to ship at frontier scale. The Akamai deal is the geographic-distribution leg of Anthropic's stack now that the raw-capacity legs (Amazon/Google) and frontier-power leg (SpaceX) are filled.
