ChatGPT merges Chat and Work, and Codex now shares your token pool

OpenAI is folding ChatGPT's Chat and Work tabs into one, according to an email to users reported by TechCrunch on November 2. The merged tab rolls out to selected users first for feedback, then to everyone. In it you can bring your files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, make a presentation or do things for you on the web. Codex stays a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app.

The line that matters is about quotas. ChatGPT and Codex will draw tokens from the same allowance pool, and OpenAI warns that "some folks might need to wait for resets more frequently." If you lean on Codex for long agent runs, your casual chat usage now eats into the same budget, and vice versa.

This is the fourth subscription quota move from a lab in about a week. Codex limits were doubled, Claude Ultra dropped its five-hour window, and Elon Musk throttled Grok Bot citing costs that are unsustainable relative to revenue. Anthropic merged Claude chat and Cowork back in September, so OpenAI is also catching up on product shape.

The read: flat-rate plans are being rebuilt around agent consumption. A single pool is simpler to explain, but it also hides how much an agent costs you, because the bill shows up as waiting for a reset rather than a number. Heavy Codex users should watch how fast the shared pool drains once the merge reaches them.
