AMD Buys Taalas to Etch AI Models into Silicon

AMD announced on August 6 a definitive agreement to acquire Taalas, the Toronto startup that hardwires AI models directly into chips. The Register story hit the Hacker News front page the same day, and AMD's own release (ir.amd.com) frames it plainly: inference is the fastest-growing segment of the AI market, and general-purpose architectures are leaving performance on the table.

What Taalas does is the interesting part. Founded in 2023, the company builds what it calls Hardcore Models: processors tailored to a single model's weights. You fix the model, then finalize a small number of the chip's metal layers around it. The weights are not loaded from memory, they are physically part of the circuit. That kills the memory bottleneck that dominates inference cost on GPUs, at the price of total inflexibility — the chip runs one model, forever. AMD plans to fold the technology into its accelerator roadmap and pair it with Instinct GPUs at the system level. Deal closes in Q4, pending regulators.

The timing says something. A day earlier, TechCrunch reported Anthropic is hiring an AI chip design team. OpenAI has Jalapeno. Google has TPUs. And now AMD is betting that for models that stay in production long enough — and frontier labs increasingly serve one flagship model for a year or more — burning the weights into silicon beats renting flexibility you never use. Inference is becoming the electricity bill of the agent economy, and everyone with a fab relationship is looking for a structural edge. Hardwired models are the most radical version of that bet anyone has made so far.
