Anthropic Just Shipped Claude For Legal. Six Plugins, Nine MCP Connectors, Big Law on Live Matters.

Anthropic launched Claude For Legal today. The framing is not a vertical chatbot. It is four primitives bundled — six practice-area plugins (Commercial, Employment, Privacy, Product, Corporate, AI Governance), nine MCP connectors hooking the canonical legal tool stack (DocuSign, Ironclad, iManage, NetDocuments, LexisNexis, Thomson Reuters, Box, Everlaw, LSuite), an open-source ecosystem with Harvey and Legora contributing on top, and Justice Access Partnerships with Free Law Project and the Justice Technology Association.

The plugin model is the structural beat. One click installs a plugin and you get the practice-area templates, the connector wiring, and the role-specific resources all at once — the same skill-pack pattern Anthropic shipped under Skills, just stitched to a vertical. Tools land inside the workflow developers already use — Word, Outlook, Cowork for complex matters, Projects for persistent workspaces. Available to every paid Claude customer with enterprise admin controls.

The customer wins are the part that says this is not aspirational. Freshfields deployed Claude across thousands of lawyers in 33 offices and reported about 500% growth in Claude usage in the first six weeks. Quinn Emanuel built its litigation platform on Claude with minimal coding. Holland and Knight and Crosby Legal are running it on live matters. Harvey, the company that until twelve months ago was the canonical legal AI startup, is now contributing as an ecosystem partner — and Claude Opus 4.7 hit 90.9% on BigLaw Bench per their own published benchmark. Over 20,000 legal professionals signed up for the launch webinar, the largest legal session Anthropic has ever held.

This is the second vertical bundle in seven days. May 6 was Anthropic Finance Agents — same plugin-plus-MCP shape, finance vertical. May 12 is legal. The pattern is Anthropic productizing skill bundles per profession instead of selling generic Claude and letting consultants do the stitching. Each vertical comes with a procurement-ready story (named law firms or banks already deployed), a customer-side champion (Big Law GCs or CFOs), and a connector list that fits the existing tool budget.

What to watch — which vertical lands next. Healthcare, real estate, accounting, and consulting are the four most plausible candidates given the MCP-connector economics. The Anthropic deep wedge into legal is also a direct shot at Harvey's standalone story, which was previously the highest-priced legal AI seat in the market. Bundling Harvey into a Claude plugin is the move that flips the value capture from app to model. anthropic.com/news/claude-for-legal.
