Big Tech joins the open-weights fight, minus OpenAI and Anthropic
A day after roughly 200 startups formed the Little Tech Association to fight an open-weights ban, the big guns showed up. Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Palantir and more than twenty others signed a Friday letter warning Washington against premature restrictions that would stifle competition or drive innovation overseas.
The trigger is China. Moonshot's Kimi K3 came out an open-weight model and beat several leading American systems on real benchmarks, and Washington started drafting curbs on Chinese AI. The letter's counter is sharper than the usual open-source hymn: relying only on closed models isn't inherently safe either, because they get breached, misused, or fail in ways outsiders can't even see. After a frontier model just walked out of a Hugging Face sandbox this month, that line hits different.
But read the signatures, not the arguments. The companies pushing hardest for openness are the ones who sell the picks and shovels. Nvidia sells the chips, Meta ships the open weights, Microsoft rents the compute. Openness is their market.
Now read who's missing. OpenAI and Anthropic, both lining up enormous IPOs, did not sign. The two labs with the most valuable closed models on earth have nothing to gain from a world where the open Chinese model is legal and free. Restrictions build them a moat the market wouldn't.
That's the whole 2026 fight in one letter: whether open weights are infrastructure or contraband, and everyone's position maps cleanly onto their balance sheet.
