Instinct gives agents a wallet with a cap, and The RealReal shuts the door

Both sides of agent shopping moved on Monday.

On the buyer side, Instinct launched Link balance with Stripe's Link. The user tops up a budget and sets a per-purchase limit, and the agent spends inside those limits "without needing access to your credit card or asking for approval every time." It is rolling out to Instinct users across the US now, with New York coming soon. Stripe's Jeff Weinstein described the stack as Privy for wallets, Tempo for stablecoins and Stripe for the onramp. That is a real design change. Until now the safe default for agent purchases was asking a human every time, which kills the point of delegating. A prepaid balance with a cap swaps per-action approval for a spending envelope, the same way a company gives an employee a card with a limit instead of approving every coffee.

On the seller side, The Verge reported that The RealReal changed its bot defenses so it is "much more difficult for all agents to log in, add items to cart, and check out." It came after The Verge used Meta's Muse agent to keep re-adding RealReal listings to a cart every time the 20-minute hold expired, which in effect let one shopper's agent lock up inventory. Meta says shopping is Muse's most common use case, with purchases averaging over $200 and 10 million US downloads in 40 days.

Put the two together and you see the shape of the next year of agent commerce. Buyers want agents with budgets, not agents that ask permission. Sellers don't object to agents buying. They object to agents doing things at machine speed that the store's rules assumed a human would do slowly, like holding a cart. The winners will be the protocols that let a store tell "an agent with a funded, capped mandate" apart from "a bot", because a blanket block also turns away the customers who just gave an agent $200 to spend.
