Shopify Lets Agents Pay. Amazon Still Won't.

Amazon blocks agents at the door. Shopify just handed them the register. On September 28, Shopify extended its WebMCP support to checkout, including Shop Pay, so browser-based AI agents can now finish a purchase on Shopify merchants' sites instead of stopping at the cart.

The mechanics are three tools: get_checkout, update_checkout and complete_checkout. An agent can read the checkout, change the address or delivery option, and place the order once the buyer authorizes it. No screenshots, no scraping the page and guessing which button is Pay. The tools run inside checkout-web on the same state as the normal checkout UI, which means no new API and no merchant setup. Wherever Shopify checkout runs, the agent path is simply there. Meta's Muse and Instinct are named launch partners.

This is the right shape for the problem. The last month's argument about agent credentials was that an agent logged in as you is indistinguishable from you, and that an agent inside a retail page is easier to steer than a person. Structured tools fix the second half: the agent sees fields and actions, not a page built to nudge. The buyer-authorization step addresses the first half, though Shopify has not yet said much about how agent identity is verified.

The strategic line is sharper than the technical one. Amazon is betting that agents are a threat to its storefront. Shopify is betting that agents are a new sales channel, and it just made millions of independent stores agent-purchasable overnight without asking any of them to do anything. If personal agents take off, the default place they shop will be the place that let them in first.
