Anthropic's MHS Is MCP for Machines That Can Break Things
Anthropic just opened the research preview for the Model Hardware Standard, and the ambition is not subtle: a shared spec that lets AI agents operate physical equipment, microscopes, liquid handlers, robotic arms, in labs and factories. MCP was the standard that gave agents your software. MHS wants to give them your instruments.
The pitch is integration time. Wiring a new piece of lab hardware into an AI workflow today takes weeks or months of custom glue. With MHS, Anthropic claims hours or minutes. In early testing, agents ran a drug-discovery experiment with real-time error handling at Genentech, and compressed an imaging experiment at HHMI Janelia from weeks to a day. Those are exactly the two domains, drug discovery and microscopy, where the bottleneck is a human standing next to a machine babysitting it.
Two design choices matter. It is model-agnostic, so a lab is not marrying Claude by adopting it, and Anthropic says it will open-source the standard after the preview along with safety findings. That is the MCP playbook run again, seed a neutral-looking standard, let the ecosystem build on it, and become the default by being first and open rather than by locking anyone in. It worked once; every agent platform now speaks MCP. The bet is that the physical world standardizes the same way.
The safety framing deserves the attention it is getting, because an agent with a harness around a robotic arm is a different risk class from one with a shell. A misbehaving coding agent deletes files. A misbehaving lab agent mixes reagents. Anthropic gating this behind a staged preview with published deployment guidance is them applying the bound-the-hands pattern we keep seeing in agent security to hardware from day one.
