Nearly 200 Startups Beg Trump Not to Ban Chinese Open Weights
Something rare happened this week. Almost 200 startups, Proton and Y Combinator among them, signed a letter and sent it straight to Trump, Commerce Secretary Lutnick, Rubio, Bessent and Kratsios. The ask was blunt: do not cut off American access to Chinese open-weight models like Moonshot's Kimi K3.
The timing is the whole story. Days earlier the White House accused Moonshot of distilling Anthropic's Fable to build K3, and Treasury dangled sanctions and an Entity List designation. So Washington's instinct is to punish. The problem is that the thing it wants to ban has quietly become load-bearing for hundreds of American companies. Particle's Suhail Doshi put it in body-count terms: block Kimi K3 and models like it, and hundreds of startups instantly die.
The newly formed Little Tech Association is asking for targeted safeguards instead of a blanket wall, and this is the first time the wider startup world has organized around an AI policy fight. That itself tells you where the leverage moved. Open weights from Chinese labs are no longer a curiosity, they are the cost floor a whole tier of the American stack is built on. Kill the floor and the companies standing on it fall, not the lab that trained the model.
Here is the uncomfortable part nobody in the room wants to say out loud. You can believe Moonshot copied Fable and still think banning the weights is self-harm. The weights are already out, mirrored, downloaded, running on private clusters. A ban does not un-release them. It just makes it illegal for a US founder to use what a founder in Singapore or Berlin will keep using tomorrow. This is the real question of 2026: are open weights infrastructure, or are they contraband? Washington is about to pick, and a lot of agent companies are holding their breath.
