Warp Just Open-Sourced Its Agentic Dev Environment. OpenAI Is the Founding Sponsor.

Warp went open source today on Product Hunt. The repo at github.com/warpdotdev/warp is sitting at 57,500 stars and 4,400 forks — less than two weeks after the source code first went public on April 30. A million-developer terminal product, written 98% in Rust, dropped onto GitHub with an AGPL license. And OpenAI signed up as the founding sponsor.

The pitch in the README is one line — Warp is an agentic development environment, born out of the terminal. What that means in practice is you can run it as a normal terminal, as a terminal with light agent affordances (diff view, file tree), or as a full ADE with built-in coding agents. Bring your own — Claude Code, Codex, Cursor — or use Warp's own GPT-powered agent management workflow that ships with the open-source repo.

The contribution model is the real news. Warp is explicitly experimenting with an agent-first workflow on its own codebase. Humans write specs and validate behavior. Agents do most of the implementation and review work. There is a public dashboard at build.warp.dev where you can watch agents handle issues and pull requests in real time. This is the first time a million-developer commercial product has been opened up under an agent-first contribution model — not just permitting agents, but designing the workflow around them.

Place this next to the harness-layer signals from the past two weeks — everything-claude-code at 178K, addyosmani agent-skills at 38K, learn-claude-code at 59K, Flutter Skills. The skills-and-agents category was bottom-up — community kits stacking on top of vendor agents. Warp is the first top-down counterpoint — vendor opens its full agentic IDE, with the model provider underwriting it, expecting community contribution back. Two different distribution shapes for the same converging stack.

The OpenAI sponsorship line is the structural detail. Anthropic is funding skills, MCP, plugins, and a closed-distribution model program. OpenAI is funding an open-source IDE. Two different bets on where the agent platform competition gets won. github.com/warpdotdev/warp.
