Anthropic's amended S-1: $17B quarter, and it may imminently hit its own AI R&D threshold

The most important line in Anthropic's amended S-1 is not a revenue number. Filed with the SEC on November 2, the S-1/A adds a sentence that was not in the October 26 filing or the earlier draft: internal estimates and expectations about future models "indicate that we may imminently meet our Responsible Scaling Policy's definition of 'dramatically accelerated progress attributable to AI.'" Anthropic adds that no current model has been designated as crossing that line, and that it is evaluating the implications and will publish more reports.

That threshold is the RSP's trigger for AI that meaningfully speeds up AI research itself. A company telling public-market investors it expects to cross it soon is a different kind of disclosure from a blog post. Under the RSP, crossing it means stronger safeguards, which can change what ships and how fast.

The numbers are big too. Q3 revenue was $17.0 billion, up 1,127% year over year, while compute and infrastructure costs grew 382%. Nine-month revenue was $33.2 billion against $34.5 billion of operating expenses, an operating loss of $1.26 billion. The $104 billion nine-month net loss is mostly fair-value changes on convertible notes, not cash burn. Committed spend totals about $895.4 billion, nearly all compute, with $69.8 billion due in the next 12 months. About 11,900 customers paying $100K or more account for 74% of revenue; around 40 million smaller customers make up the rest.

What the filing still leaves blank is the run-rate revenue as of October 31 and the price range. One thing that is not new despite the fresh headlines: the claim that internal Claude usage at list prices passed Anthropic's payroll in April was already in the October S-1.
