Manus is a company again, and Beijing is the reason
Manus posted a note to users on August 11 saying it will soon resume operating as an independent company. Eight months after Meta bought it for a reported two billion dollars, the deal is being unwound — not because it failed commercially, but because China's NDRC blocked it back in April and ordered it reversed, citing outbound investment rules and technology export controls.
Worth remembering how fast this arc ran. Manus went viral in spring 2025 on a demo of a general-purpose agent that just went and did things. Butterfly Effect, the company behind it, moved its headquarters to Singapore in mid-2025 — the standard move for a Chinese AI startup that wants Western capital and Western customers. Meta closed the acquisition December 29. April, blocked. August, unwound. Roughly eighteen months from viral demo to being pulled apart by two governments.
The part that will actually hurt users: data created on or after December 29, 2025 — the day Meta's acquisition completed — gets deleted between August 23 at 8am and August 24. Backups have been available since August 11 and the window closes August 23 at 7:59am SGT. If you built anything on Manus during the Meta period, that's your deadline. Eight months of agent runs, gone on a schedule, because of a corporate structure you never agreed to.
The lesson isn't about Manus. It's that the agent layer is now inside the same geopolitical machinery as chips. A relocated headquarters and a Singapore address did not make Butterfly Effect a neutral company in the eyes of the NDRC. Anyone building an agent business that straddles China and the US should price that in — the technology export control framing means agent scaffolding and product IP are being treated as strategic assets, not as software.
