Meta Takes Muse to Work, and Pulls MongoDB's CEO to Run It
Meta just hired a sitting public-company CEO to sell agents to businesses. On September 28 Meta launched the Meta Enterprise Platform, which packages Muse, Meta Business Agent, the Muse API and Muse Code for enterprise customers, and named Chirantan "CJ" Desai, until Monday the CEO of MongoDB, to lead it. MongoDB shares fell more than 17% and Dev Ittycheria stepped back in as interim CEO.
The hire tells you what Meta thinks the gap is. Its models and agents are not the problem anymore. Muse Code is a real coding product and Muse is being pitched as a personal agent. What Meta has never had is an enterprise sales machine, and the fastest way to get one is to hire someone who has spent a career selling infrastructure to CIOs.
The pitch leans on Meta's existing reach: millions of advertisers and hundreds of millions of businesses already using its tools. Pricing and named customers were not disclosed. That matters, because the trust question has not gone away. A week ago Muse was fighting accusations about which model powers it, and Amazon still blocks the Muse agent from buying on its store.
The competitive map is now crowded at the top. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Microsoft all sell agents to enterprises; Meta is the fifth giant walking in, and the one with the least enterprise history but the most small-business relationships. Watch whether it attacks where the others are weak, the long tail of businesses that already run their customer conversations on WhatsApp and Instagram.
