Warp Ships an Agent CLI That Runs in Any Terminal, Including Not-Warp
Warp spent five years convincing developers to switch terminals. On August 4 it gave up on that requirement: the new Warp Agent CLI is a standalone coding agent that runs in whatever terminal you already use, including Ghostty, iTerm2, VS Code's built-in terminal, and the stock Windows and Mac ones.
Read that again, because it is a strategy reversal disguised as a product launch. Warp's whole pitch used to be the terminal itself, with the AI as the reason to switch. Now the agent ships without the terminal, which puts it in direct competition with Claude Code, Codex CLI, and the rest of the agent-CLI crowd. CEO Zach Lloyd frames it as a move toward factory engineering, meaning the agent handles triage, implementation, review, and deployment as a pipeline rather than autocomplete moments.
The signal worth taking away: yet another company just concluded that the agent is the product and the surface it runs in is a commodity. The terminal was supposed to be Warp's moat. Moats keep moving up the stack, and everyone is converging on the same layer at the same time.
